Ronnie O’Sullivan withdraws from World Open

Ronnie O’Sullivan will not be taking part in the World Open after withdrawing from the event.

The Rocket revealed at the German Masters at the start of the month he was suffering from glandular fever, and after taking part in the Welsh Open, where he reached the semi-finals last week, the 36-year-old has decided not to travel to Haikou on the Hainan Island in China, for the World Open beginning in a weeks’ time.

“I am very sorry that I have to withdraw from Haikou. Despite my illness I have been competing well in recent weeks and was greatly looking forward to taking part in the World Open and meeting my fans in China.

“However, I have to listen to my body sometimes and I have decided that I will be in better shape for the climax of the season and the world championships if I listen to my doctor and spend the next few weeks resting. I hope I can make it to Ireland [Players Tour Championship finals] and China [China Open] in March and look forward to seeing you all soon,” O’Sullivan said in a statement.

O’Sullivan has a history of skipping events over the last few years, something that has affected his position in the world rankings. The three-time champion of the world was on the verge of dropping out of the world’s top 16 but after securing his first ranking title in over two-and-a-half years with success in Germany his place in the top 16 is secure, meaning he won’t have to qualify for this year’s world championship at the Crucible.
